I often dream of trains when I'm with you
I wonder if you dream about them too
Maybe we'll meet one night
Out in the corridor
I'm waiting for
You........[Robyn Hitchcock]
If you live in Derbyshire you can organise a Railway Funeral..[.although,I guess,It might be 'a bus-service only'on Sundays ?]
One of the first books I remember reading as a child was Emil and the Detectives.About a young German lad who falls asleep on a train & has some great adventures.I remember being struck by the book's illustrations.I recall a particular nightmarish image of a train (looking like the Devil himself!)somehow climbing a tree in pursuit of young Emil.Very vivid.Very scary!
What didn't help was that ,as a 7 year old myself,I suffered badly with asthma. In those days we didn't have inhalers.Instead, my doctor had prescribed me little wee Methodrine tablets(pure.high grade amphetamine, now highly illegal.5-star grade "speed" essentially )
.So ,when poorly I would get out of having to attend school,My Mum would pack me off to bed after popping a pill in my mouth& I would be Tripping (& wheezing!) for the rest of the day ! You can imagine, those tablets also added a dangerous edge to the books I read!
Of course, one thing about asthma is you can fake-it.I did sometimes. The chance to bunk-off school AND tripping at the same time was too great a temptation!
As a result ,even now, I never trust my symptoms when really poorly.I can be truly sick but still drag myself into Work ( I believe I,m faking it!) Please don't tell my employer that my exemplary attendance record is not due to me being a workaholic but, rather, to my drug-addled childhood!

dude...i def dream of trains...grew up with them rolling by the bottom of the hill...falling asleep to their sounds....
Mick Taylor is playing in NYC next week. Should I go? Also, please follow all the music listings for NYC and tell me what shows to go to. Thanking you in advance.
Great photo, Tony.
Kurt.ummmm...personally,I wouldn't care that much about see Mick Taylor. But I do like the sound of the "John Lennon Bus Tour".Although,Is the bus a modern one? I mean,If it's in bad nick.....I would probably have a heart attack if it backfired during the journey........
you're either ON the bus or you're OFF the bus!!
Not sure this gem will appeal to your musical tastes but as videos go... Michel Gondry's train journey is one of my faves.
Also while we're on the "train" tip.... can't help but mention KLF's excellent album Chill Out!
Great Tracks!
i really loved the video. that must have been made long ago. No cell phones!
The railway funeral - seems like it would be an inexpensive way to go. Not even a casket!

I Love trains, and I Love this post. Everything about it.
Sleeping and waking up the next morning on a train is pretty wonderful too.
It's Always Wise To Get A Return Ticket!
The video has a ghostly feel to it. Fine picture of your son in from of that train. Felt the man in the second picture shoule have been wearing a black cape.
Hubby loves steam trains. You can more or less guarantee whenever we go on a trip there will be a steam train involved at some point!
That train wreck in Paris must have been horrific.
Great post, Tony! You got a bit of everything included in here. Sorry to hear about your asthma stuff and scary books, but your boy was sure a cutie when he was little.
Great pictures and videos,
Kathy M.
Loved the picture of your son and the train, loved Bob Dylan, loved "I often dream of trains"!
They had real telephones on trains in those "olden" days?
Barbara
I don’t think I’ve ever dreamed of trains, but that crash scene looks more like a nightmare and the funeral doesn’t appeal too much either!
It is that perfect Sepia Saturday mixture of images leading to memories, leading to thoughts and observations. Blogging as dreaming, dreaming as blogging. Great.
This book sounds wonderful. I will try to find a copy. Thanks for introducing me to it.
The picture of your son is adorable, the second picture of the man on the tracks is rather creepy. The wrecked train is an amazing shot - I wonder if that was a vintage "oops" by the engineer?
Emil and the Detectives - I always liked that book. Getting one over the bullying policeman.
