I often dream of trains.

My topic is "trains".Here is a photo I took of my son Chris in The Dominican Republic in 1991.

One of the first books I remember reading as a child was Emil and the Detectives.About a young German lad who falls asleep on a train & has some great adventures.I remember being struck by the book's illustrations.I recall a particular nightmarish  image of a train (looking like the Devil himself!)somehow climbing a tree in pursuit of young Emil.Very vivid.Very scary!
What didn't help was that ,as a 7 year old myself,I suffered badly with asthma.In those days we didn't have inhalers.Instead, my doctor had prescribed me little wee Methodrine tablets(pure.high grade amphetamine,now highly illegal.5-star grade "speed" essentially )
.So ,when poorly I would get out of having to attend school,My Mum would pack me off to bed  after popping a pill in my mouth& I would be Tripping (& wheezing!) for the rest of the day ! You can imagine, those tablets also added a dangerous edge to the books I read!
Of course, one thing about asthma is you can fake-it.I did sometimes.The chance to bunk-off school AND tripping  at the same time was too great a  temptation!
As a result ,even now, I never trust my symptoms when  really poorly.I can be truly sick  but still drag myself into Work ( I believe I,m faking it!) Please don't tell my employer that my exemplary attendance record is not due to me being a workaholic but,rather, to my drug-addled childhood!

The book illustration that captivated me as a child & I see vividly now in my minds eye,was drawn by Walter Trier (1890-1951). I cant find this image-memory anywhere on the internet,but perhaps he took the idea from the above photograph?
