Ok! It's not Tennis but (looks like) Lacrosse?
"Lacrosse versus Tennis," in which the writer proves, to his own satisfaction at least, that Lacrosse is a dangerous innovation which is making dastardly attempts to uproot and scatter to the winds that venerable root of all - virtue, lawn tennis; and that, if it be not speedily wiped out of existence, untold misery will descend upon the community...........[The Harvard Crimson:1881].
It seems my Aunt Brenda sometime played on The Dark Side...?

what an interesting photo...huh...lacrosse can def be rather brutal...much more so than tennis...smiles.
Nice picture Tony, and thank you for being first. This must be a record, some people are still posting on SS 131! I never played Lacrosse, my school went in for jolly hockeysticks.
Have you fiddled with that photo, or is it as-was? Sorry I'm so "daft," as you say.
I just love this photo! What an amazing time it must have been....and your Aunt Brenda sounds very interesting...do tell more! :)
Yup Kurt..I did play about a tad (cropped& smoothed a tad).....Karen .More Aunt Brenda HERE
With all that running around, I suspect Auntie Brenda may have experience Lacrosse-stitch at some stage. Only in a needle match, though.
Your Aunty Brenda is very stylish...love her hat. And the other photo is very surreal in it's "sepianess".
I've never played Lacrosse but I did play hockey at school. I didn't like it because I invariably got whacked across the shins with a hockey stick!
I can vouch for the brutality of lacrosse. The men's hockey team at St Andrews used to play the ladies lacrosse team (Scottish Univerity Champions)each year. We used to come off the pitch the bloodiest.
That's a superb old photo of Aunty Brenda's, Tony.
Interesting photo. I never played lacrosee and avoided field hockey too. I didn't play tennis more than twice. I swam through high school.
take a walk on the wild side
indeed.
wonderful photo, and wonderful aunt.
it's so much more fun on the dark side....... as long as your son doesn't end up chopping your head off!
This is a wonderful photo, Tony. After reading the serious warning, I couldn't help but think that all new things face objection from somebody, don't they? I'll check out your other news of Aunt Brenda too.

It's hard to tell what that picture shows...
I actually did take lacrosse when I had to take gym class in my freshman year of college.
Tony Zimnoch now got a problem.

Hello Tony and happy Friday to you.;)
Looks like a nice old family photo, it is unbelievable you have all these vintage photos in your possession.;)
Btw, what does the title have to do with the post, am I the only one not getting it, hihi.;) Would not surprise me.;)
Have a great weekend,
xoxo
Either lacrosse or an arcane martial art. Hang on... perhaps lacrosse IS an arcane martial art.
It looks from the foreground as if the photographer was hidden behind a bush?
I didn't realize lacrosse was so controversial in its infancy. But I can see the appeal -- lack of skill is not apparent with a crowd on the field running together whereas in tennis, a player's ability is out there for all to see.
I can't imagine being able to play any sport in those dresses.
Not related, but I saw this and thought of you, as the old post office ads used to say....
It's an animation of two robots invading via a park-bench.... "Don't come near the Bench!"....

Great photo. I like Aunt Brenda. True everything new and society does not yet understand is gonna send us to the devil. I remember our first telephone, TV, Elvis Presley etc.

You Know Your Getting Old When You Can Remember Exactly What You Were Doing The Moment You Heard That JFK Had Landed On The Moon!!:)
ah, that old Lou Reed ditty brings back great memories. And who would have thought lacrosse was subversive. Go Aunty!
Tony, never dig to deep into the family's history!
Great photo, almost cinematic. But I think field hockey. I can't make out any of the hooped laced ends of Lacrosse sticks. But women running around with sticks of any kind is a frightening thought.
Interesting what you did with that photo. I had no idea what lacrosse was before today - I'd heard of it but never seen it.
