On The Roman Road

This is a Sepia Saturday post.

Carlisle is a fine fine border city.
Did you know? The Romans never got to Scotland, only as far as Carlisle.Beyond there lies monsters (even makes UKIP scared!)
Cath & me today moved like Romans.
We took a train journey on the beautiful Settle~Carlisle Line & spent 5 hours in this border city .
We had a Turkish Bath:a Meal:A Museum & A Castle ! Much Joy. Dig my photographs here.....

Because I lived & worked in the East End of London,I have always had a soft spot for the place.
I look at sepia photographs of the Old East End &  feel exiled twofold. Once by 'place':(i now live in The North of England) And once by 'time' .
The 50s& 60s are gone forever i guess?
This week, I first saw these 17 sepia photos ,any one would have fitted the bill. Here is just one example at random. click here to view the rest of David Hoffman's extraordinary exhibition of the Sepia Roman Road
Enjoy!
( This week's prompt asks for " Street traders, roadside artisans, menders, cobblers, tools-of-the-trade...")

Hey Kids!Click ,put on your headphones & listen to some classic Sepia Audio!
Go On ! You know you want to!
Here is Phil Ochs Live in New York; December 15, 1965.Singing "Joe Hill"
its funny, the copyright police have finally found me! They would not let me put a direct link here.!You will have to leave this page to listen to this illegal Phil Ochs recording. It may be "sepia", but its still dangerous!Hurray!

Wonder where I could go on a train, stay 5 hours and return. I'll have to look into that. And, the 50s and 60s aren't coming back. I keep looking for that rewind button, but to no avail.

We Cannot Buy a "Return Ticket" no matter how hard we try! :)

Beautiful photos, Tony, both sepia and pastel. Though we may wish there was a rewind button or return ticket to those lost times, we mustn't forget that we are now them, waiting for the next generations to get nostalgic about us! They will collect our antiquated cellphones and look at our primitive 2-D images and wonder at how ever did we get by with such primitive devices?

Great to see Westmorland on the signs again. When I lived in Kendal as a child that was part of the address - not Cumbria! I’d be tempted by the Turkish baths too.

Interesting photos all round - both yours & David Hoffman's. Thanks for sharing!

That east end black and white photo is priceless!

The train schedules around here have become so unreliable that I would be afraid to attempt a day trip.

I'm impressed that you can have a Turkish bath and do anything afterward. That kind of thing wipes me out and all I can do is stagger to bed. Loved the photo.

Your photo gives new meaning to the "car boot sale" theme.

It's a long time since I was last in Carlisle but I recognised some of your shots.
The Hoffman series of shots are superb.

...there is a panic on the streets of Carlisle...

... amazing photos, Tony... I don't know, but they simply touched me in some kind of way... thanks for taking the time to share...

I like the concept of exiled by time and place. If we took a train ride, we'd have to wait for the scheduled Ghan which would take us 3000+ kms to Adelaide - too far for a day trip, though we could make it to Katherine about 300kms away...but it's easier to drive. Exiled by place indeed.

Always as colorful as i remember, I much enjoyed the ride. Hoffman's pictures sure revealed an interesting world. Contrary to you, I wouldn't want to find a rewind button. I'm glad I'm a child of the '60s, but I wouldn't go back. What is done, is done!! I enjoy a bit of nostalgia, but I prefer to look forward.

Good post!!
