In A Dream You Saw A Way To Survive And You Were Full Of Joy.

My search for cleverness continues..........
Me & Cath went into Manchester's Whitworth Gallery to see an exhibition called   In A Dream You Saw A Way To Survive And You Were Full Of Joy
To be honest, I knew little about it,but I just loved the title! It was an electic mix of curated  stuff.
I mean,Andy Warhol and Eric Gill in the same space !

The first Gill sculpture I,ve ever seen...it was the highlight for me.Brilliant.
I'm still not a big fan of The Whitworth. It brands itself as an International Gallery.Very well healed visitors....it could just as easily be in London or New York. I get no feel of Northernness or Manchesterness.Frankly ,it feels a bit up itself!
All those comforable people coming to look at photos of homeless street sleepers, while outside the beggars of Manchester seem to multiply each time i visit the city.

13th August : Happy Valley Pride.

https://zimnoch.smugmug.com/Dropbox/Happy-Valley-Pride-13th-August/
So. I went into Hebden Bridge this afternoon.
Taking a look at Hebden Bridge's first ever Pride.
Really nice feeling around the town.
Hebden has been a Gay friendly place for many years.I'm surprised this hasnt happened before now.......
I was thinking of David Cameron today. The only "brave " thing he ever did was to support Gay Rights legislation.
I guess he must have  some rich gay friends?, Because he never did fuck all for gay disabled people:gay midwives:the  gays homeless:gay public service workers:gay ambulance drivers:gay lorry drivers:gay youth;gay unemployed:etc etc.....

#KeepCorbyn :Manchester.

It's going to be a hard fight "for the soul of the Labour Party".
If we are going to put our faith in Chilcot & the 'big majority in the last Labour Leadership election ',we are fucked.
it will be different this time..... I cannot believe Chilcot is going to deliver any knock-out blow to Blair ( establishment reports never do). yougov reports that currently ,its 50/50 for Jeremy Corbyn among Labour members.Given the media this week, that is hardly surprising .
Plus ,expect all sorts of 'dirty tricks' from Blair & co.Along the way ....( "60,000 new members this week"...they wouldn't be reporting this if it was 'bad'news would they ...?)
It is going to be a tough fight. But (whatever the result) Socialism Maintains.

rustic fences & and sepia sheep.

A photo I took on   Saturday in   the  middle  of Halifax's 4    day International Street Market.
More images  https://zimnoch.smugmug.com/Dropbox/Halifax-7th-May-2016/
This is a sepia saturday post.My take on the theme is rustic rural fences & sheep.
As a child West Yorkshire sheep were  sepia due to all the pollution  from the  mill chimney smoke. Whenever   travelling, i could exactly  calibrate   distance from   home ,  by   the ever changing  shades in their fleece.   Essentially,Yorkshire sheep were the first SatNav's............

ßringing a painting into safety.

My take on this week's prompt ("bringing a painting into safety") is how do we rescue  from our collapsing world what we need to preserve ?ake  personal remains our own....
Sometimes that is harder than it sounds.Solid monuments might dissolve into sand & trickle through our fingers.........

This is a sepia saturday post.

ironically ,April 1st

Maude the Tigon   Her father was a tiger. Her mother was a lion.
She lived in Belle Vue Zoo between 1936-1949.
When she died her skin was preserved & given to Manchester Museum. They kept it hidden in a drawer for 50+ years.
In 2015 a local taxidermist mounted what she left them......dear Maude is now on display. (trust me,she looks happy enough, but her eyes sure do follow you around the room....!)
Me & Cath went into Manchester today. Here are some photo i took........
Me Cath & Chris have lived in the same house in Hebden Bridge for 30+ years. This year we leave it.No doubt this will be a theme as the weeks & months unfurl..Stay Tuned Folks!

A mistress of something she thought...........

I was up in Mixenden Library this morning.Holly Lynch ,the Labour MP for Halifax , was there for some sort of Coffee Morning gig.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holly_Walker-Lynch
We thought it might include a Q&A session...but nothing materialised
Comrade Ken Kersley was wanting to ask her why she had thought bombing Syria to be such a good idea. But no opportunity to discuss such issues......... .........nice Coffee though !
& nice to see James again.
I also got an opportunity to get a sneak preview of a film documentary called "Archipelago" recently shot in Mixenden ; commissioned by Manchester University and heavily featuring Ken .. It gets it's first public showing locally very soon.I feature a few "stills" from   it here......https://zimnoch.smugmug.com/Dropbox/Holly-Lynch-MP-Mixenden/

The Last Resort: Martin Parr.

via: Artsy
In 1975 Parr moved to Hebden Bridge where he would complete his first mature work. He was involved with the Albert Street Workshop, a hub for artistic activity which included a darkroom and exhibition space.
Parr spent five years photographing rural life in the area, focusing on the Methodist (and some Baptist) non-conformist chapels, a focal point for isolated farming communities that in the early 1970s were closing down.
He photographed in black-and-white, for its nostalgic nature and for it being appropriate to his celebratory look at this past activity. Also, photographers at that time were obliged to work in black-and-white in order to be taken seriously, colour being associated with commercial and snapshot photography.
His series The Non-Conformists was widely exhibited at the time and published as a book in 2013. Critic Sean O'Hagan, writing in The Guardian, said "It's easy to forget how quietly observational Parr was as a black-and-white photographer

Floods of Biblical Proportions Happened.

Photo taken by Martin Parr:1975: Manikinholes Methodist Chapel [near Hebden Bridge].

It was suggested less than two years ago that my town of Hebden Bridge   should be designated the UK's second city.
Today,as I write this ,the only businesses now  left open in the town are Nathan's Barbers:  Marco's Italian Greasy Spoon
,2 small charity shops: Bonsalls DIY shop; The White   Lion Pub.; Boots Chemist &The Town Hall. That's all that left open/ habitable!
A week ago .Rain Came over a 12 hour period when  Floods of Biblical Proportions happened...
Destroyed in Hebden Bridge alone  are...2 churches;.3 Banks:8 pubs; The Post Office& sorting office; The Library:The Theatre:The Cinema:The Council's Elderly Day Centre:many hundreds of homes wrecked and/or  evacuated: The Coop Supermarket & approx 200 shops & business:factory units:are not habitable :bridges have collapsed:the only road out has a dirty big crack in it between Hebden bridge & Mytholmroyd.
Even 2 days ago 500 other homes in Hebden Bridge were without electricity.
This was just one town ! Others along the valley were just  as broken or,arguably, even worse. The towns and villages of Mytholmroyd:Todmorden;Copley:Sowerby Bridge:Brighouse:Midgley.etc etc all got hit    .......
A Million things happened this week. Here are just a few Vignettes that will have to act as a taste of things.
Over the New Year Weekend, the local  Town Hall is where the volunteers are organised.
A huge room (the size of a half a football field) has free dry foods that have been donated & you can come in and help yourself.Plus cleaning products.etc:a kitchen & cafe were the Muslims serve the free hot food. Legal Advice etc etc is also  given.
Local People offer their  skills for free so,[Hebden being Hebden ] you can even get free Reflexology!
Today (new year's eve) I went to our only remaining barber to get a haircut. The owner Nathan (with beard) was offering haircuts/beer & disco.A interesting combination........The kids & Mums seemed to enjoy it..!
Loyds Bank: Hebden Bridge: last Saturday morning.

Sadly I have heard some  terrible stories from neighbouring   Mytholmroyd. The (fairly new build) Catholic church The Good Shepard ( a mini Liverpool cathedral / built in-the-round) is totally fucking. I hear the 80 year old Parish Priest was rescued in the dark while wandering dazed & confused down a side street.waist deep in water.
Nearby, in a big posh housing estate , rescue services couldnt reach because of water levels.Local farmers went from door to door to check everybody was ok (apparently a lot of elderly people lived there) .They burst into one Living Room and  found a silent, immobile elderly gent sat upright in his armchair with  water all around his waist.......Two big farming lads had to carry him out  to safety.......
Read *here* how the town is organising how to mend itself (& how you might wishes to help)
Dec 31st 2015.Beer/Disco/Haircut Promotion:Nathan's Barbers,Hebden Bridge.

This week i having been doing my small bit by trying to help salvage the Council's Elderly Peoples Day Centre.
The British  Army are here.So are groups of Muslim volunteers, from as far afield as London, who have been here this week helping us.
A few of the many Muslim Lads from London (300 miles away!)who came this week help us.

The local Muslim Community has been amazing !Halifax Mosques have set up a food kitchen & have been shipping in daily hot free food.

This is another one  of my legendary Sepia Saturday   posts.
